Chapel and Church of Our Lady of Loreto (Lombada do Loreto)
This 16th century church and chapel is located on the Lombada do Loreto site.
The following is known about this chapel from an old book in the parish archive: “this chapel is magnificent for its architecture and manufacturing, it was built in the beginnings of this parish…”. The chapel of Nossa Senhora do Loreto, is one of the oldest in the parish, it was initially the chapel of the houses of Pedro GonΓ§alves da CΓ’mara, 3rd son of the 2nd captain of Funchal, and was ordered to be enlarged by his wife D. Joana de EΓ§a, lady of Queen D. Catherine of Habsburg.

The chapel has a set of Manueline architectural elements. “The main altar of the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Loreto had work done at the end of the 18th century, and from that time there was a painting on canvas signed by Nicolau Ferreira and dated 1791″. This was part of JoΓ£o GonΓ§alves Zarco's manor and retains the baptismal font.
Manueline church with a longitudinal plan and a single nave with a Mudejar roof and main gable facade. Revival due to the construction of the large galilee, tower finishing, pinnacle decoration and polygonal openings.

An 18th-century church, located at SΓtio da Igreja in Arco da Calheta in 1472, it was headquartered in the SΓ£o BrΓ‘s chapel and its first vicar was Father Pedro Delgado. This Mannerist and revivalist style church with a longitudinal plan, where the paintings of ramadas in the Chapel of Our Lady of FΓ‘tima and the side and collateral altarpieces stand out, this main church was rebuilt in 1744.

Geography

The parish of Arco da Calheta is surrounded to the north and west by the parish of Calheta, and east by the municipality of Ponta do Sol (specifically the parishes of Canhas and Madalena do Mar), fronting the Atlantic Ocean along its southern border. Buildings are found in the amphitheatre-shaped valley, as well as on the escarpments overlooking the community, alongside Calheta (in Calhau Grande) and Madalena do Mar (Achada de Santo AntΓ£o). Its landscape within this semi-circular valley was the basis for its name; the early settlers, owing to the band/arch of settlements with the valley, baptized the region the "Arch of Calheta", or Arco da Calheta. A band of laurisilva forests subdivides the parishes built-up area from the barren vegetation of the mountains.
