😍😍 πŸ’πŸ’ PARISH OF PRAZERES (MUNICIPALITY OF CALHETA)

PRAZERES
(PARISH OF CALHETA MUNICIPALITY)
32.753822, -17202896

Prazeres (English: pleasures) is a civil parish in the municipality of Calheta in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. The population in 2011 was 704, in an area of 10.03 km2. Prazeres is located along the main Regional 222 Roadway, linking it to FajΓ£ da Ovelha and Estreito da Calheta. Agriculture continues to be the driving activity in the region, although commercial establishments are scattered within the community.

History
The name for the parish developed due to the existence of a small chapel in the area before the creation of the parish, dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres (English: Our Lady of Pleasures). The reference to pleasure came from local references to an area that captivated the senses and the areas symbiosis with earthly pleasures. Historically a part of Estreito da Calheta, this region became independent, along with some homes in FajΓ£ da Ovelha on 18 December 1676.

Geography
Prazeres is central parish within the municipality of Calheta, juxtopositioned between Estreito da Calheta and FajΓ£ da Ovelha. Physically, it extends from the edge of the escarpment overlooking the Atlantic Ocean into the interior to the Serra do Paul. In addition, upon reaching its pinnacle in the interior (1276 metres) the border continues down the river-valley of the Ribeira da Janela. Most of the community, the built-up residential, commercial and productive buildings of the parish, are located on a main promontory overlooking the fajΓ£ (coastal debris field) of the parish of Jardim do Mar. Similarly, this area is the primary agricultural lands accessed by ancillary roads extending almost to the cliffs' edge. Starting in the Regional Roadway 222 area, the terrain is more inclined, and forested until reaching the Serra do Paul.

Culture
The Clube Desportivo e Recreativo dos Prazeres (English: Sports and Recreational Club of Prazeres) is the local sports association, supporting athletes in many different areas (such as Futsal, badminton, gymnastics and/or athletics). The Sports Club is located in the eastern part of the parish, along with the main athletic field and air-conditioned sports pavilion.

The Caminho Real, one of the official Madeira Islands Footpaths (PR19) starts in Prazeres and leads to Paul do Mar.

The parish has seven restaurants, serving typical traditional delicacies (such as cod) or other customary foods, such as Italian pizzas, lasagnas, or pasta dishes. A popular drink, Poncha da Madeira, is a traditional liqueur drink made from lemon or orange brandy and is common in many of these restaurants.

Nossa Senhora das Neves Church

In 1676, a charter from D. Pedro II provided Bishop D. Fr. AntΓ³nio Teles the dismemberment of the hermitage of Nossa Senhora das Neves, dependent on the Estreito da Calheta, so that a new parish could be formed with some couples separated from FajΓ£ da Ovelha.

The works for the church put out to tender by the Finance Council in 1689 were awarded by Manuel dos Santos, then the vicar of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, Father Manuel Dias Pinheiro.

On November 20, 1745, the Finance Council ordered the construction of a new church, in a location far from the first. A provision from June 1784 grants three arrobas of wax and three jugs of olive oil to the confraternity of the SantΓssimo de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres.

During the time of Miguelist rule, this church was robbed and the Tabernacle was desecrated, which caused a general indignation, with reparations being ordered to be celebrated in all the churches. The Bishop also published a pastoral alluding to this sacrilege.

Quinta PedagΓ³gica dos Prazeres

Quinta PedagΓ³gica dos Prazeres is a project that aims to raise awareness, education and appreciation of the rural environment, which is promoted by the local parish of Prazeres, in Calheta, Autonomous Region of Madeira. It is located on the land adjacent to the Nossa Senhora das Neves parish church and was inaugurated in October 2000.

It has a space that houses various animals (from pigs and sheep to emus and llamas, among others) and allows visitors to come into contact with them, and also has a tea house.
